Your character will define your legacy – Sir Sam Jonah tells Academic City graduates

Academic City University has held its 2025 graduation ceremony, the first since receiving its Presidential Charter in December 2024. The event celebrated not only the fourth graduating class in the university’s history but also the very first batch of BSc students in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Biomedical Engineering.

The ceremony drew dignitaries, industry leaders, families, and friends who gathered to honour the Class of 2025. Notably, Academic City is the first higher education institution in Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa to graduate undergraduate students in Robotics and AI. The total number of graduating students was 122, representing approximately 12 nationalities. Among these graduates, 42 were female and 80 were male, showcasing the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President of Academic City, Prof. Fred McBagonluri, described the graduates as a special class and torchbearers of innovation and resilience.

“You are the first to graduate under the new Presidential Charter. You are also pioneers, the first in Ghana and Sub-Saharan Africa to earn undergraduate degrees in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. Your achievements set the standard for the future of higher education on the continent.”

Delivering the keynote address on the theme “Future-Ready Leadership for Nation Building”, renowned Ghanaian business magnate Sir Sam Jonah reminded the graduates that “character is the currency that never loses its value.

“While degrees, networks, and wealth may open doors, it is integrity that will sustain their impact and relevance. The future will test your integrity and it is your character that will define your legacy,” he further added.

Drawing on his own journey from a labourer in Obuasi’s gold mines to Executive President of AngloGold Ashanti, Sir Sam highlighted the transformative power of discovering and staying true to one’s purpose.

According to him “Leadership is not a position but a disposition.”

He urged the graduates to reflect deeply on what they are called to do, warning that without a clear purpose, even the most prestigious titles can ring hollow.

The Guest Honour, Prof. Daniel Wubah, President of Millersville University, USA advised the graduates to leverage the Academic City experience to think critically, act ethically, and lead with purpose.

“You are armed with knowledge, equipped with skills, and imbued with the spirit of Academic City. The world awaits your contributions, your innovations, and your leadership. Step into it boldly, not just as graduates, but as changemakers ready to leave a lasting impact.”

The university’s commitment to excellence and innovation was evident in the Class of 2025’s academic records and achievements. Notable among the graduates was Joseph Ibiduma Apiriala-Atedoghu, who was recognised as the Overall Best student with a CGPA 3.95.

The ceremony also highlighted the unique journey of the Class of 2025, who designed a symbolic logo featuring a tortoise—a Ghanaian folklore emblem signifying patience, resilience, and quiet strength. who remain steady and tactically reactive. This symbol captures the spirit of this graduating class.
